Vaccinations are an integral part of an animal’s
medical care. We recommend that a puppy or kitten be seen at the hospital
for its first vaccines at approximately 7-9 weeks of age. (This also
applies to ferrets). We will then see the pet in 3 week intervals, and
discuss which vaccines are needed at each visit. The last vaccinations are
usually administered at around 14-16 weeks of age. This whole process
usually turns out to be about 3 visits to the office.
Core vaccines for dogs (These are
recommended for all dogs)
1. DHLPP- “distemper”- This combination
vaccine includes distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza, hepatitis, and
leptospirosis.
2. Rabies- administered at a minimum of 3
months of age.
3. Lyme Disease
Non-Core dog vaccines:
1. Bordatella- “kennel Cough”- usually
required for boarding facilities, grooming facilities, and show dogs.
Core vaccines for cats (recommended for
all cats)
1. FVRCP- “distemper” This includes feline
viral
rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia.
2. Rabies- administered at a minimum of 3
months of age.
Non-Core cat vaccines:
1.
Leukemia-for outdoor cats only
Ferrets:
Core vaccines for ferrets include Rabies and
Distemper. Please schedule your ferret’s vaccination appointment for a
morning or early afternoon appointment, as we recommend a 30 minute
in-office observation period after administering vaccines.
Adult animals need to have annual and tri-annual
vaccines depending on the type of vaccine and the age of the animal. The
doctors will customize your pet’s vaccine protocol to meet their needs.
