Heartworm Disease

Heartworm is a parasitic disease spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.  Due to the necessity of a mosquito bite, this is a seasonal problem in the Northeast.  All dogs should be tested in the springtime before beginning on their seasonal heartworm preventative.  Dogs can also be maintained on all year round preventatives, which negate the need for an annual blood test.

Heartworm preventatives also kill roundworms, hookworms and whipworms, which are 3 of the more common intestinal parasites in dogs.  These parasites are of zoonotic concern (infectious to people), so the pills are actually making the dog safer to be around, and protecting the entire family.

The type of preventative that we recommend is Interceptor.  Interceptor is a beef flavored tablet that is easily given once a month by mouth.
